UK industry environment spending analysed
British industry spent an estimated UK£3.4bn (€5bn) on environmental protection in 2003, according to a survey of around 8,000 firms. All EU states are required to make such annual reports. Some 85% of spending was operational. Capital expenditure was directed largely at pollution control rather than pollution prevention, reversing an earlier trend (EED 10/12/02). Expenditure was offset by income of UK£178m from sale of by-products and cost savings of UK£265m. Just over one-fifth of companies separately identified environmental spending or reported it in their annual report or accounts. See survey results.
