PET bottle recycling breaks new record

Collection of European post-consumer PET plastic bottles reached a new record high of 650,000 tonnes in 2004, 8.5% up on 2003, according to specialist recycling organisation Petcore. It said that though Germany, France and Italy continued to collect the bulk of PET, other countries were beginning to expand their collection systems. Fast rising exports of collected PET to the Far East have stabilised at 19%. It expressed hope that more PET will be recycled in Europe once Germany introduces a "more transparent nationwide collection system in May 2006". See press release.
