Norway loses environmental tax exemption case

The Efta court has ruled against Norway in a dispute over green tax exemptions for industry (EED 08/10/02), confirming that they constitute state aid in violation of EU guidelines and must be repaid. The Norwegian finance ministry described the case as important in clarifying when a green tax is covered by connotations of state aid in the EEA agreement, and how the Efta surveillance authority should deal with similar support schemes.
