Talks begin on standards for EU road tolling
European standardisation organisations have started discussing standards to back up the 2004 EU directive on interoperability of road charging systems. The law aims to harmonise road toll systems for cars and lorries across all 25 member states. A draft standards study, presented to interested parties last month, is the first step towards a work programme covering principal market needs for standards to 2010. It focuses on the development of onboard vehicle equipment that would automatically communicate with electronic tolling stations as a key priority area. See study and Cen press release.
