Monsanto GM maize approved for EU market
The European Commission has approved a Monsanto GM crop variety for sale in the EU after member state governments failed to agree on the application. The firm's MON863 maize variety will now be available for import and processing into EU animal feed but not for cultivation or for use in foods. The Commission approved the application after first a member state committee (EED 29/11/04) and then environment ministers (EED 20/06/05) were unable to reach a qualified majority in favour or against commercialisation of the crop.
