European water and health protocol in force
A new pan-European protocol on water and health entered force in early August after receiving its 16th ratification. The protocol was agreed in 1999 (EED 18/06/99) through the World health organisation and UN economic commission for Europe. It is described by WHO as the world's first legally binding international agreement in the fight against water-related diseases. Twenty-three EU countries have signed the protocol, though only ten have yet ratified and thus become bound by its rules. See protocol webpages and press release.
