Trittin declares victory over pack deposits
German environment minister Jürgen Trittin has declared a long battle over deposits on one-way drinks containers "over". During a visit to a brewery using returnable bottles, Mr Trittin said that deposit opponents had decisively lost in both German and European courts. He also claimed success for the measure, which he said had lifted the share of refillables back above 60%, and to nearly 90% in the beer sector, since it was introduced in January 2003. The European Commission could still launch further legal infrinagement proceedings against Germany over the measure. See press release.
