Third EU green light for GM product
The European Commission on Wednesday authorised biotech oilseed rape GT73 for use in animal food in the EU. This is the third time it has authorised a GM product unilaterally after governments failed to decide for or against (EED 21/12/04). GT73 was approved for use in refined oil for human consumption in 1997. Wednesday's decision does not allow it in other human foods or for cultivation. Environmentalists said that transporting and processing GT73 in Europe posed a "substantial risk" to the environment. See press releases from the Commission, Greenpeace, and FOEE.
