EU to allow cadmium car batteries to 2008
EU governments now look set to agree a proposal to allow continued use of cadmium batteries in electric cars until 2008, overcoming previous differences (EED 11/07/05). The European Commission proposed the extension from a general 2005 deadline under the 2000 end-of-life vehicles directive arguing that there were no practical short-term alternatives. Some governments wanted either to stick to the earlier deadline or to extend it further. Sources close to the talks said most governments had now resolved their concerns about a new 2008 deadline.
