Court rules in EU slurry waste definition case

Animal slurry is not necessarily waste if it is used as fertiliser, according to a European court of justice ruling in favour of Spain. The European Commission had claimed certain Spanish pig farms were in breach of the EU waste framework directive in their treatment of slurry, but the court on Thursday ruled the directive does not in this case apply. Pig farms were however found to be violating EU laws on urban waste water treatment, impact assessment, and nitrates pollution. See judgements in cases C-121/03 and C-416/02.
