Italian environmental law rewrite criticised
A first draft of new wide-ranging environmental legislation being prepared by the Italian government will "undermine environmental protection in favour of business interests", environmentalists have claimed. The draft was leaked last week by WWF, which is asking for more openness and better consultation in the process. The NGO also laments that a 24-strong expert committee that was originally charged with drafting the legislation has been sidelined. The controversial new laws, which aim to reorganise and simplify environmental legislation in Italy, were initially due to be completed by end-2002 (EED 23/10/01), see press release.
