Ministers run out of time on deca-BDE
The European Commission is set to exempt brominated flame retardant deca-BDE from an EU ban on hazardous substances in electronics after ministers failed to reach agreement by a deadline of 7 September. Ministers got involved after earlier negotiations were inconclusive (EED 20/04/05). In a vote on 2 September, more votes were cast for the exemption than against, sector group BSEF reported on Wednesday, but too few to achieve a required qualified majority. Under EU rules, the commission must now approve the exemption unilaterally. See statement.
