Council adopts position on chemical curbs
EU farm ministers on Tuesday formally rubber stamped a first reading common position on a draft law banning the solvent trichlorobenzene and restricting sale to the public of another solvent, toluene. The measure was proposed by the European Commission last year (EED 30/04/04). The sole point of difference with the European parliament at first reading is the council's desire to introduce a derogation permitting use of trichlorobenzene as a process solvent in closed chlorination reactions. Both institutions backed another derogation for use of trichlorobenzene in the manufacture of "safe" munitions. See press release.
