Advance for Portuguese water policy and quality
Portuguese drinking water quality improved significantly in 2004, according to the annual report of national water and waste regulator IRAR. Institute director Dulce Passaro told ENDS Europe DAILY that while "quality still needs to get better, a big improvement has been achieved because of more stringent controls and recent large-scale investment in the supply network". In a related development, the Portuguese parliament on Thursday finally approved legislation transposing the EU water framework into national law. See IRAR.
