WWF targets EU's "dirtiest" power stations
Environmental group WWF has identified the 30 European power stations that emit most carbon dioxide per unit of electricity produced. Most of the "dirty thirty" are coal-fired plants, the rest being oil-fired. Five of the ten most CO2-intensive plants are in Germany, four of them operated by RWE. Noting that many existing power stations will be decommissioned in the next 20 years, WWF stressed that replacing the "dirty thirty" with gas-fired plant would nearly halve their CO2 emissions, while replacing them with renewable capacity would lead to a three-quarters cut.
