Mini-budget "threatens Italy's environment"
A draft mini-budget issued by the Italian government and currently being examined by parliament would jeopardise environmental protection, Italy's Green party has warned. Funding for soil protection would fall from €200m to €120m, and for the clean-up of contaminated sites from €14m to €8m, while other environmental protection programmes would lose their €100m budget. Other cuts would affect land protection, parks and cycling. The cuts have been proposed as part of an effort to rein in Italy's stubbornly high budget deficit. See press release.
