Belgium off the hook over dioxins
The European Commission has decided not to take legal action against the Belgian government over its role in a serious dioxin food contamination scare in 1999. It had claimed that two EU food safety directives were breached when Belgium failed to inform its partners via the Commission as soon as it knew that dioxins had entered the food chain (EED 21/06/99). The EU executive said in a statement that it was satisfied that everything had been done to ensure that such an infringement was not repeated and, in particular, that the Belgian authorities had agreed to discharge their full legal obligations in future.
