Tougher mining waste controls mooted

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on the management of mining waste. Interested parties, including EU member states, environmental NGOs, European and national industry federations are being asked to respond to proposals in a new working document by 1 September. There will also be two meetings with national officials and other stakeholders in July. The initiative follows a cyanide spill from the Baia Mare mine in Romania into the River Danube and a spill of heavy metals into the Coto Doñana national park from the Spanish Aznalcóllar mine tailings dam. See official notice and working document.
