EU agrees toxic feed alert system
European farm ministers yesterday adopted a directive aimed at ensuring effective handling of animal feed contamination emergencies through a rapid alert system and requirement for member states to have contingency plans. The agriculture council also reached a common position on a proposed directive that would ban the dilution of contaminated feed using uncontaminated feed. Limits would also be set on undesirable substances, such as dioxins and heavy metals, in feed additives. The new rules were proposed in response to the recent BSE and dioxin contamination problems.
