EU to boost funding for NGOs

The European Commission today proposed a big rise in EU funding for environmental groups. The bloc currently gives euros 2.65m per year to green NGOs. This could now rise to euros 6.4m per year from next year. Groups in eastern European countries would also be eligible for funding under the Commission's proposal, including the Balkan states. The planned budget of euros 32m over five years compares with the current euros 10.6m over four, agreed in 1997 (EED 18/12/97). See press release. The full proposal will shortly be posted here.
