World shipbreaking guidelines debated

Draft global guidelines designed to protect the environment and workers from hazards associated with the dismantling of old ships were discussed by a working group under the UN Basel convention on hazardous waste trade last week. It is expected that the document will be finalised at the group's next meeting in October before being officially adopted by convention parties next year. The guidelines focus on management of hazardous wastes such as PCBs, heavy metals, asbestos and oil and gas. See draft guidelines.
