Dutch promote global ship scrapping fund
The Netherlands has called on major maritime trading nations to support a global fund for financing the disposal of end-of-life ships in an environmentally responsible manner. Speaking at a ship recycling conference in Rotterdam on Monday, a government spokesperson urged the UN to create an action plan and called on Japan, Greece, the UK, Germany, the USA, Norway, Taiwan and Singapore, which collectively order over 80% of all ocean-going ships, to support it. Draft global guidelines on safe and environmentally sound shipbreaking are currently under discussion (EED 25/06/01). See Dutch environment ministry press release.
