De Palacio curries French favour on nuclear
EU energy commissioner Loyola de Palacio made a strong defence of nuclear power yesterday in a major speech delivered in France. She said it was "irresponsible" to phase out nuclear if the EU wanted to meet its Kyoto protocol commitments, or "without explaining that...it has numerous advantages, [including] in terms of carbon dioxide emissions." The statements came close to contradicting a Commission policy paper released last November, which said ongoing nuclear phase-outs in five EU member states would not hamper Kyoto protocol implementation (EED 30/11/01).
