EU environmental liability directive delayed
Proposals to create an EU regime of financial liability for environmental damage will not emerge from the European Commission before next year, the European Parliament's environment committee was told today. An environment directorate official said a proposal would be sent for internal consultation "most optimistically at the end of November, more likely in December," despite a previous commitment to produce concrete plans before the summer (EED 18/05/01). The Commission has yet to complete several studies expected to underpin its proposal. See European Commission's environmental liability pages.
