Belgian parliament approves Kyoto ratification

The lower house of Belgium's federal parliament yesterday approved a legal text allowing for eventual ratification of the 1997 Kyoto climate protocol, following a similar step taken by the upper house in June. Parliaments in at least two other EU countries - France and Denmark - have already taken similar steps, but Belgium's move is an important signal of support for the protocol because it will lead the EU delegation at the climate talks in Bonn next week. Formal ratification by any EU state is not yet possible as all EU countries must jointly ratify the protocol .
