Ireland bids to boost farm plastic recycling
Irish producers and suppliers of farm plastics must introduce a refundable deposit of euros 254 (I£200) per tonne unless they sign up to an officially endorsed collection and recycling scheme, environment minister Noel Dempsey announced today. Mr Dempsey said that regulations introduced in 1997 had helped increase recycling to 40% but warned that Ireland's rural environment was still being undermined by "silage bale wrap and sheeting being casually strewn in fields and ditches". The new regulations would strengthen enforcement and prevent "free riders," the minister added. See press release.
