EU coastal zone management brochure out
All EU countries should create integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) strategies, the European Commission urges in a new brochure. Otherwise, it warns in apocalyptic terms, increasing strains in these areas "will end up destroying some of the most beautiful, biologically rich and fragile areas in the EU, while coastal communities are torn apart by unemployment and social disintegration". Issued in 11 languages, the document reiterates proposals made formally in a September 2000 communication (EED 29/09/00). See Commission ICZM pages and brochure.
