Norwegian government woos green voters
With parliamentary elections only weeks away, Norway's minority Labour government has issued a flurry of popular environmental decisions. Shortly after its announcement of a temporary ban on oil drilling in a sensitive area of the Norwegian Sea (EED 30/08/01), the environment ministry moved to protect 118 square kilometres of forest and woodland in three counties. It also halted construction of a controversial golf course in the scenic district of Maridalen on the outskirts of Oslo, and approved an ambitious sustainable development plan for Vestfold county.
