EU delays cadmium fertiliser decision
The European Commission has delayed a decision on how to tackle the contamination of mineral fertilisers by cadmium until early next year, it announced today. The EU executive also proposed extending derogations allowing Austria, Sweden and Finland to maintain strict national limits on cadmium until the end of 2004. The exemptions had been due to lapse at the end of this year, by which time the Commission had promised to propose a harmonised EU-level solution to the problem (EED 18/09/00). A consultation is to follow soon. See press release.
