Final consultation on Irish plastic bag tax
Ireland's environment minister Noel Dempsey today published draft regulations for a levy on most types of plastic shopping bags. Under the draft rules, which the ministry has timetabled for entry into force next February, retailers would be obliged to pass on the full amount of euros 0.15 (I£0.12) per bag to consumers. Mr Dempsey said he wanted to change consumer behaviour and reduce plastic bag litter. Revenue will be used to fund environmental initiatives. Mr Dempsey first announced plans for the levy in 1999 (EED 23/08/99). See press release.
