MEPs pass air pollution deals
The European parliament today formally approved at third reading two major new EU air pollution laws. The directives, on large combustion plant releases and national emission ceilings for four key pollutants, were agreed in July after months of disagreement with governments and the European Commission (EED 04/07/01). The council of ministers is expected to take the same step next week, paving the way for formal entry into force. See European Parliament press release and agreed directive texts.
