Portuguese nature conservation plan approved
Portugal's council of ministers has approved a ten-year nature conservation and biodiversity strategy, incorporating several recommendations made during a consultation period launched in May (EED 23/05/01). Among the final priority objectives are the creation of a national nature conservation network, improved management of protected areas and integration of the principle of sustainability into national infrastructure policy. Environmentalists have given the strategy a broad welcome while warning that implementation of its ambitious objectives will be hampered by inadequate human and financial resources.
