NGO highlights "global GM contamination"
Contamination of crops and foods worldwide by genes escaping from the specific crops into which they were engineered through genetic modification (GM) is now "the big problem" posed by crop biotechnology, according to Friends of the Earth International. In a new brochure, the NGO surveys examples of "GM contamination," including the American "Starlink" maize episode and similar contamination of oilseed rape in Europe (EED 19/05/00). In response, the world must move as quickly as possible to agree a liability mechanism under the UN Cartagena biosafety protocol, it concludes. See press release and the report.
