Gayssot insists on Mont Blanc reopening
French transport minister Jean-Claude Gayssot said yesterday that the Mont Blanc tunnel would reopen before the end of the year despite protests about environmental threats posed by the return of heavy goods vehicles to the area (EED 27/08/01). Mr Gayssot said that sharp increases in lorry traffic through the alternative Fréjus tunnel since the Mont Blanc fire had to be cut. He promised the reopened tunnel would be subject to new environmental regulations that would lead to a 25-30% reduction in lorry traffic compared to pre-fire levels. See press release and dossier.
