European steel can recycling up in 2000
The amount of steel packaging recycled in 13 European countries rose by 15% in 2000 to reach 1.67m tonnes, according to industry association Apeal. Notable features of the year include a big rise in Italy's recycling rate from 9.5% in 1999 to 26%. Portugal and Finland, which are also at the bottom of the recycling league, also exceeded the minimum 15% recycling rate set in the EU's 1994 packaging directive. Luxembourg became Europe's champion steel packaging recycler, increasing its recycling rate from 69% in 1999 to 93% last year. See press release.
