Italy's carbon tax set for reform
Italy is to reform its national carbon tax, reports news service e-gazette. The tax is currently linked to specific sources, but environment minister Altero Matteoli is reported to be pressing for it to apply to all carbon dioxide emissions irrespective of source. Meanwhile, the government has announced a freeze in the 2002 rate of the tax at the same level as this year, aimed at slowing down the rise in energy prices. Introduced in 1999, the tax was briefly suspended following a spike in world oil prices (EED 07/04/00). See e-gazette.
