Global green surveillance scheme go-ahead
EU research ministers yesterday agreed in principle to an initial three-year phase of an EU-led international cooperation programme to develop a global satellite surveillance network focusing primarily on environmental problems. The global monitoring for environment and security (GMES) initiative will be coordinated and funded by the Commission and the European space agency; funding levels have yet to be agreed. By 2008, it is hoped the network will be providing benefits including better tracking of soil erosion, biodiversity loss and ocean temperature change.
