EU guidance on Natura 2000 impact assessment

Non-binding guidance on how member states should assess the environmental impact of projects or plans "significantly affecting" Natura 2000 protected sites was published yesterday by the European Commission. Produced by consultants at Oxford Brookes University, the document provides a step-by-step approach to assessment, focusing on the cumulative effects of proposed plans and projects, screening methodology, alternative solutions and mitigation. The guidance is aimed at regulators, developers and Natura 2000 site managers, the Commission said. See the report.
