Overview of EU maritime safety actions

The transport directorate of the European Commission has issued an overview of recent efforts to strengthen maritime safety policy following the Erika oil spill off north-west France in 1999. The paper identifies the state of play of all relevant legislative proposals, including those included in the EU transport white paper published in September. Anticipating final approval this month for the first set of new EU maritime safety legislation, known as the "Erika I" package, the Commission urges member states to implement the new rules quickly.
