Norwegian toys flunk phthalates tests
Spot checks on soft plastic toys and baby products have revealed phthalates in ten out of 20 products tested, Norway's pollution control authority (SFT) reported yesterday. The announcement comes just after Danish manufacturers and importers were criticised over continued presence of phthalates in toys despite a national ban in force since 1999 (EED 05/12/01). A similar ban was imposed in Norway last year. Previous rounds of random monitoring in 1999 and 2000 found phthalates in over half of items tested. SFT says it is considering legal action.
