Dutch glasshouse CO2 tax breaks to continue
The Netherlands received EU approval today to continue partially exempting commercial greenhouse growers from a national tax on natural gas consumption designed to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. A further six years' approval has been granted, provided that the sector's current under 10% tax rate increases by 10% between 2002-2004 and by another 10% between 2005-2007, the European Commission said. The exemption does not apply to Holland's electricity tax, which the sector pays in full. Greenhouse horticulture is Netherlands' most energy-intensive agricultural sector. See press release.
