Flemish inland waterway grants approved
Plans by Belgium's Flemish region to provide financial support for improvements to inland waterway infrastructure have been approved by the European Commission. The five-year scheme will aim to increase goods transport on inland waterways by constructing new loading and unloading facilities. The state will contribute up to 50% of capital costs for about 25 projects per year. The Commission raised no objections to the state aid, saying that it was fully compatible with EU competition rules and should contribute to goals set out in the recent transport white paper.
