EU nuclear industry emissions assessed
Radioactive liquid and air discharges from EU nuclear installations between 1995 and 1999 have been assessed in a report published yesterday by the European Commission's environment directorate. The study covers all 73 operational nuclear power stations as well as fuel reprocessing plants. It also previews an, as yet unpublished, analysis of population doses for the decade 1987-96. This concludes that, without exception, the most exposed members of the public only received "a fraction" of the 1 millisievert (mSv) per year dose limit imposed by EU law. See the study.
