New steps in Alpine road transport battles

Controversial Austrian policies on trans-Alpine lorry movements were in the spotlight on 20 December. Days after approval in principle by EU leaders at the Laeken summit (EED 17/12/01), the Commission proposed extending the country's ecopoint lorry permit system from the end of 2003 to the end of 2004 and possibly to the end of 2006. On the same day, however, it threatened renewed court action against Austria for levying unjustifiably high tolls on the Brenner pass motorway despite a 2000 court judgement (EED 27/09/00).
