EU chemicals agency updates progress
The European chemical bureau's last newsletter of 2001 appeared on 21 December, reporting on an early December technical meeting on the EU's existing substance risk evaluation programme. This came close to finalising a risk assessment for cadmium, concluding that extra control measures will be necessary for some industrial installations. The toxic metal is already targeted by various pieces of EU legislation and is at the centre of disagreements over the future of nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries, for which a separate targeted risk assessment is ongoing and expected early this year (EED 23/11/01).
