Italian oil tanker scrapping aid investigation

The European Commission is to investigate the Italian government's plan to offer ship owners financial incentives to scrap older single-hulled oil tankers (EED 30/03/01). While supporting Italy's "objective," which is to reduce the risk of oil spills by encouraging an accelerated modernisation of its fleet, the Commission said on 20 December that it was "concerned" the plan in its current form could lead to "negative environmental side effects" or undue distortion of the EU's internal market.
