France embraces green farm certification
The French government is to strongly encourage farmers to become certified under an environmental management system (EMS) known as integrated crop/pest management, agriculture minister Jean Glavany announced yesterday. The initiative is aimed at reducing environmental impacts, for instance by cutting use of pesticides, without a full-scale shift to organic methods. Mr Glavany hopes that widespread certification will lead to measurable improvements in both the environmental performance and public image of French agriculture. See press dossier.
