Go-ahead for huge Irish wind farm
Planning approval was today granted for what could become the biggest offshore wind farm in the world, seven kilometres off the Irish coast. Construction of the first 60 megawatts should start this year, rising to 520 megawatts "in the presence of a clear government policy" of support, said developer Eirtricity. The completed project would provide nearly 10% of Ireland's electricity needs, avoiding about 1.1m tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Total costs are put at around euros 630m.
