Dutch dream of multifunctional countryside
The Dutch agriculture ministry has outlined to parliament a long-term vision for rural areas focused on ensuring multi-functionality. Accommodating the multiple demands placed on the countryside must be dealt with through full integration of policies covering agriculture, nature protection and recreational use, says the ministry. The necessary policies will be developed over the coming year and discussions will begin with farmers on implementing new EU agriculture policy rules that allow an increase in financial assistance to farms that contribute to environmental protection.
