France in the dock over hazardous substances

The European Commission yesterday announced a court action against France for failure to transpose on time a 1999 directive imposing new restrictions on the toxic chemicals pentachlorophenol, cadmium and organotin anti-fouling agents. The measure was passed as a technical adaptation to the 1976 marketing and use of certain dangerous substances directive, and the deadline for compliance by all member states was 29 February 2000.
